Boeing admitted that their software fix isn't robust enough and the boom will require a hardware fix to solve the axial load issue. Oof, this debacle just keeps getting worse, doesn't it

They said the software works, but it doesn't do enough, so yeah it just keeps getting better.

And the debacle just gets better. The problem with the boom was high pressure at the nozzle when connected. The reason? Unlike pretty much every boom ever built prior to the new Gee whiz ultra high tech boom, there is no pressure relief valve on it.

Since the own the IP, shouldn't it have been insultingly easy for Boeing to have simply (figuratively) cut and painted the KC-10's boom CAD file onto the KC-46 airframe?
It's not as if they didn't already have a boom that was perfectly sized for a 767-sized widebody...

But then it wouldn't be the super duper mega advanced ultra high tech boom that they want.

I know, I know.
It would have been far, FAR too easy for Boeing to have simply grafted the KC-10's boom system (and comfy control setup) into a 767 airframe and call it a day. So easy, in fact, that had they chose to take that route, there would probably be dozens of KC-46's entering service as we speak, perish the thought...

No, because they'd just screw something else up. They probably would have used Kaptone wiring.

"The KC-46, saving costs and simplifying development by leveraging many technologies from the KC-10, features a state-of-the-art fly-by-wire system derived from the 777, and an all-new composite wing and bleedless turbofans drawing on Boeing's extensive experience developing the 787"
I can see the press releases already...

The Air Force is facing a new contract if a continuing resolution is passed. Under a CR the FY17 buy would be capped at 12, which would delay the RAA date, and put them in violation of the contract terms. Under that they COULD be forced to renegotiate the contract, which would cost the AF a lot more than the current contract.
