The Navy has had to go to three squadrons to find spare parts for the Hornets on carriers fighting Isis in the Middle East. At the same hearing the commander of the USS Normandy said that while she was in the yard they were taking parts to keep Eisenhower escorts ready to deploy. The Navy is currently facing an almost $850M shortfall in their operations and maintenance budget for ships and aircraft. Ships that are on a lower priority are having parts taken for higher priority ships. And yet there's no replacement in sight for the Ticonderoga's, which are quickly starting to feel like the "falling-apart-in-the-sky" F-15's of the US Navy.
And they're still the US Navy's premier BMD ships!
Is there any chance we could have a separate folder for discussing US Navy issues? They're facing a procurement situation with their surface fleet that's easily as dire as the USAF's, and they've also got some pretty cool stuff coming down the pipeline with the Zumwalts, the Fords, and the VPM's.
Since every one of those three will either launch or be capable of launching aircraft (yes, the last one too, even if they're just of the single-use, unmanned, exploding variety, though I think they'll be launching more), I figure it's not TOO off-topic...

I don't see why we couldn't add the Navy surface ships in. We're still growing so we'll figure things out as we go. I should be on my laptop tomorrow so I'll divide some boards up into ships.

I just learned that in addition to the F-22 display team and the Blue Angels, we're also getting the USS Zumwalt herself for Fleet Week in October.
I might have to get a real camera for that one.

Yeah, I'll probably just end up doing the mirrorless thing. I like Nikon's, but I also know some folks who swear by the new Sony Alphas, too.
