The first tests of the F-35 noise impact on residents near the two bases that will house them are in. Measuring equipment near the airfield showed 109dB peak for the F-35, with 112dB for the F-16. Both aircraft made 14 passes, 7 in the morning and 7 in the evening with and without afterburner. They also asked people living in the area to fill out an online survey on perceived noise for both aircraft. They had around 1500 responses, the majority showed that the perceived noise of the F-35 was lower than the whine of the F-16 engine. aviationweek.com/defense/f-35-f-16-noise-difference-small-netherlands-study-shows

I'd be interested to see this done around some fighter bases in the US with exceptionally hostile surrounding residents.

The community around Whidbey NAS are always complaining about the noise. The Navy has to have strict times they can operate at and advertise when they are and aren't going to be flying out of the base. If the F-35C proves to be quieter than the EF-18's and F/A-18 they fly out of there now, that would go a long way to smoothing relations and keeping the base there on the island.

I'd love to see everyone getting them perform this study. This was a great idea and wonderful way to introduce the aircraft.
