Another Thursday, two more crashes for demonstration teams.
It started with a Russian Knights Su-27 near Moscow. The team was returning from a demonstration at the opening of a memorial when one aircraft crashed into a forested area, killing the pilot. The aircraft suffered an unspecified mechanical problem. It had recently undergone work at the factory level.
Later in the day, the Patrouille Suisse team was practicing for a show at Leeuwarden Air Base, which will include the first F-35 in Europe, when two aircraft touched. One aircraft suffered the loss of one horizontal stabilizer but apparently landed safely. The other aircraft crashed near the base, with the pilot ejecting safely.
