Faced with costs that are rising exponentially, issues with the system that have it non-functional up to 95% of the time, and delays, the Navy is considering putting a modified Mark 7 Mod 3 arresting gear on the Ford class carriers, instead of the Advanced Arresting Gear that is installed on the Ford. Ford and Kennedy have had money paid for the system and it's been installed on Ford, so it's not clear if they will change it out for the Mark 7, but there's a good chance Enterprise will have the older system. In 2009, R&D and acquisition costs for four AAG systems was $476M. The 2016 estimate showed a cost of $1.3B for the same four systems. That's a 130% increase in cost over 7 years. The Navy has quietly said that if they change to a Mark 7 on Kennedy and Enterprise, they won't fight very hard to prevent it. news.usni.org/2016/05/24/19801

The AAG, and even the EMALS, both seem to violate that key tenet of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
It also doesn't help that they're forced to mature instantly under the stresses of launching and recovering porkers like the rhinos/growlers, the latest electronics-stuffed Hawkeyes, and the presumably F-14-sized F/A-XX.
The steam cats at least had time to mature launching tiny cessna-sized piston fighters and T-33-sized 1st and 2nd-gen fighters before they ever had to launch any B-17-sized bloated pieces of Reagan-era naval aviation hardware.
They probably would have thrown in the towel as well if they had to launch a fully loaded F/A-18E the first time around...

We'll find out about EMALS next year. They're planning a Rhino launch as the first one from the deck of the Ford.
