It looks like the tactical contract air industry is going to be expanding more and more in the near future. These companies have been saying that this expansion would happen for several years, and it looks like it's finally happening.
In the latest news, Canada has their Contract Airborne Training Services (CATS) competition going on, with 2 main competitors: Canadian based Discovery Air Defence and a team of CAE and Draken International.
This contract follows in the steps of the USAF issuing a 1 year red air contract to Draken International at Nellis AFB, after the closing of one of the Air Force's aggressor squadrons. By all accounts, this contract has been very successful and could lead to more contracts up for bid in the future.
It's worth noting that possible contracts are not limited to just adversary support, contract air companies are providing CAS training to JTACs, test support for equipment and aircraft, and electronic warfare.
The three main contractors out there right now are:
1. Draken International: Flying mainly A-4s and L-159s, has contracts with AF, Navy, and USMC
2. ATAC: Flying Kfirs, Hawker Hunters, and L-39s, has historically contracted heavily with the Navy
3. Discovery Air Defence: Flying A-4s and Alpha Jets (has also said they are going to procure F-16s - who knows about that), currently contracting with Canadian AF
All of these companies are aggressively moving to capture any contract they can right now. Look for them to rapidly expand in the future as militaries worldwide look for cheaper alternatives to in house training.
